Charles B. Pyke, Ph.D., President and Principal Scientist of  Environmental Science & Energy, Inc., has launched a new business designed to develop and offer an emerging new technology, consisting of the development of ocean wave and tidal energy, plus highly efficient, low-cost wind, solar, and hydroelectric energy, for homes, farms, schools, and businesses, using state-of-the-art small wind generators, solar panels, and small-stream hydroelectric power turbines .

In 2008, Former Vice-President Al Gore challenged the United States to become independent from fossil fuels for all of our electrical needs: "So today, I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100% of our electricity from renewable energy and truly carbon-free sources within 10 years." (7/17/08) Mr. Gore specifically mentioned in his speech the falling prices of wind and solar energy technology, in contrast to the rising prices of oil and coal.  Mr. Gore's words are just as pertinent today as they were in 2008, as oil and gasoline prices are once again rising out of control, just as they were in 2008.  .

It has become evident that there is an increasingly urgent need for the development of alternate sources of energy.  Especially needed are economically feasible sources of renewable energy, such as ocean wave and tidal energy, as well as local wind and solar energy.

As for ocean wave and tidal energy generators, we can develop:

  • Ocean wave energy generators for coastal communities and power grids:

Miniature electric generators constructed in the surf zone to respond to the rapidly rising and falling height of the water surface resulting from ocean waves (even Great Lakes waves) approaching the beach or cliff.  The fluctuations can be amplified by the construction of V-shaped flanks, including a sloping surface under water, that focus the energy into a narrow and shallow collector, containing the generator.  Like with the tidal energy generators, a fish and seaweed screen will likely be necessary around the generator.

Multiple wave generators, separated by a few tens of meters, along a given ocean front, are also feasible.

In some settings, ocean wave and tidal energy generators could be co-located with, or combined with, large or mid-size wind energy turbines and/or solar energy panels.

  • Tidal energy generators for coastal communities and power grids:

Construction of a small dam near the far end of a bay, harbor, lagoon, fjord, estuary, or coastal waterway gravitationally connected to the ocean, creating a small artificial tidal basin that becomes sealed off from the ocean, except for a small opening in the dam.  Placement of a reversible hydroelectric generator in the opening of the dam to generate electricity from the flow of water through the dam -- into the basin on the rising tide and out of the basin on the falling tide.  The tidal basins must be constructed at locations that will not disturb natural fish or sea life habitats.  The generators must be screened from the ocean to prevent fish, seaweed, and other solid matter from entering the generators.  The screens must be cleaned frequently (preferably by energy-efficient automatic scrubbers).

In some settings, multiple generators in a single dam may be the most efficient arrangement.

At locations where boats pass between the tidal basin and the open sea, gates in the dam can be constructed so that they can be opened during the hours straddling low and high tides, when ocean level changes are minimal.  The gates do not have to be water-tight.  Small leaks through the gates will not materially affect the energy generation of the facility.

Tidal generators can also be placed at locations where there is a natural tidal current of significance, including tidal bores and tidal waves (a term not to be confused with tsunamis, which are not tidal in origin).

  • It is also possible that solar panels and/or medium-sized wind turbines can be affixed atop tidal energy dams.

As for wind and solar energy, we already have large wind and solar farms, using giant wind turbines and large collections of solar panels.  However, high-tech wind, solar, and hydroelectric energy generators are also needed on smaller scales, as well

  • Local wind turbines and high-tech versions of the old-fashioned windmills are needed to supply individual farms and even individual urban homes, schools, and small to mid-size businesses with electric power that can supplement, or - with proper storage capacity - even supplant, the need for electricity from the power companies.

  • Local high-tech solar panels are needed to do the same for homes, farms, schools, and small businesses.  With proper state-of-the-art storage capacity, these solar collectors can supplement co-located wind devices and can run a home or a farm continuously through a mix of breezy and calm, sunny and cloudy days, and can even generate reverse energy that can be sold back to the power companies during periods of moderate or strong winds and ample sunshine.

  • Local high-tech small-scale hydroelectric generators placed along the banks of small and mid-sized streams and small rivers flowing through cities and rural areas.  Although there are some applications of small-scale hydroelectric generation for individual homes and small farms, most smaller-scale hydroelectric generation is ideal for intermediate-sized users, such as large farms, larger businesses, large schools and colleges, and small communities.

Environmental Science & Energy, Inc., Associated Science Experts, LLC, and American Weather & Hydrology, LLC have developed relationships with companies and agencies that operate large-scale wind turbine farms and solar energy farms.  We are also working with emerging companies that are developing state-of-the-art, high-tech, highly efficient local wind, solar, and hydroelectric generating equipment for individual homes, farms, schools, and businesses.

There are also special needs temporary installations of special wind and solar energy-generating equipment for:

  • Local devices to power instruments making measurements needed in forensic discovery cases.

  • Local power needed in conjunction with Certified Weather Observations.

  • Local power for special events, such as outdoor lighting and sound equipment at small concerts, political rallies, religious gatherings, weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc., where standard AC electric power is not readily available, or is more expensive than local solar or wind generation.

Environmental Science & Energy, Inc. is also looking into the development of cost-effective fuel cell technology.
